Quantum is named after the FBI Academy where some of the characters in this book are trained. The book places the reader in a near future in which practically anyone can develop lethal viruses in their basement, and where the world lives on the brink of chaos due to terrorism. The protagonists have to follow a trail that goes back to the anthrax attack cases that took place in 2001, for which the culprit is still unknown.
With this book, Greg Bear makes one of his forays into the "FBI thriller" genre, although it still contains some traces of science fiction, especially in reference to bioterrorism and the creation of viruses that selectively attack their victims based on their genetics.
The book is interesting and a quick read, though it's not one to reminisce about at certain times. Greg Bear writes best when he's writing 100% Science Fiction.
