WordPress Class – Part 2

Contents of this article

Good morning!

What a class yesterday! I'm not very satisfied, even though a good number of students managed to get everything working... many others didn't. And thank goodness Alfons and the rest of the people who managed to get it working helped me solve the problems of the rest.

On the one hand, I now realize that the next time I teach this class I have to reduce the number of attendees and on the other hand, I have to centralize all the students in a single ISP so that by seeing a single control panel we can all work (and it will be the one of www.sync.es(Of course, it was the only one that didn't cause any problems). But anyway... let's get to the point, which is why I wrote this post.

Since many of you were unable to install and run WordPress 3.0, we agreed to repeat the session this coming Monday at 10am, if I could get a classroom at the Graduate School. Unfortunately, this was not possible, because I forgot that the Administration was on summer schedule and I contacted them after 3pm. So I was unable to request the classroom.

What I'm going to do is the following: on Monday first thing in the morning I will request a classroom for the Thursday 29th from 10am to 2pmAs soon as I get confirmation, I will publish it as a comment on this blog.

On the other hand, for those of you who were left halfway or whose installation failed, please review the following:

  • What do you have:
    • Login and password of the contracted hosting
    • Domain name directed to the contracted hosting.
    • Database name, username (with administration permissions) and password.
    • FTP client (Filezilla is fine).
    • Download WordPress 3.0 to install it on the contracted hosting.
    • If you have already installed WordPress, you will also have a login and password to access the WordPress content manager.
  • Critical points where errors can be made are as follows:
    • Create a database and a user, but do not assign the user to a specific database or give the user administrative permissions.
    • Not properly transferring WordPress from your computer to the server (FTP) and losing some files along the way.
    • Confusing logins and passwords when the WordPress installation asks you for database data.
    • Hosting may have problems with WordPress 3.0
  • How to fix these issues:
    • Carefully review the created database. You can see this in the control panel of the contracted hosting.
    • Upload WordPress to the hosting carefully and make sure that all files are uploaded.
    • An error that users who contracted hosting with CDMon had was that in the FTP there is already a file called index.html and when we upload our WordPress index.php it conflicts with it. We must delete the index.html. This allows WordPress to start the installation correctly.
    • Create a good document with the logins and passwords for everything, so that it is very clear what each thing is.
    • Use WordPress version 2.9 if you have no problems during installation but are experiencing critical errors at the end and cannot access the content manager control panel.

My advice is to try to do it yourself this weekend and in the days that remain. Start over with everything: delete the database, create it again, check all the logins and passwords and upload WordPress to the server again (you don't need to delete the new version, you can tell FTP to "overwrite" the old files). Look for a good WordPress installation manual on the Internet (you can find it on wordpress.org).

Good luck! If all goes well, we'll see you on Thursday, we'll do another installation and we'll see how to use the themes and how to modify them. We'll also install some plugins so you can see how it works, including one that makes installing the Google Analytics codes easier.

A big hug.
