On July 23rd, WordPress Website Creation Course

Contents of this article

Following requests received from some of my students, next Friday, July 23, I will give an extraordinary session for all students of one of the Masters in which I teach at the UABThis class is open to both students from the 2010 editions and alumni from the 2009 editions.

In principle, students who are eligible to attend this class should receive a notification from the university in their emails.

Class: Creating a website using WordPress as a content manager.
Day: Friday 23rd at 10am
Place: UAB Graduate School (classroom to be confirmed)
Cost: free of charge.

Class duration: about 4 hours, although if they wish, students can leave as soon as the website is online and working.

What we will learn: We will learn how to download the software for content management (WordPress), how to use an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client to upload files to a server, how to create a database and a user for that database, how to install WordPress on a hosting, how to configure it, how to change the original WordPress design using new templates, how to edit a template and how to enter the content into the website. If we have time and everything goes well the first time, we will also see how to open an account in Google Analytics and how to include the tracking codes in WordPress in order to analyze the traffic of the website we have created.

Example of some corporate websites created by our team using WordPress: www.fertiliser.com, www.restaurantinsolit.com, www.sixtytwohotel.com,  www.albumdigitalcanarias.com, www.biciescapa.com, www.top-news.com and of course, this blog www.montsepenarroya.com

What you need: To follow the class well and end up obtaining a perfectly functional website, it is necessary to have the following:

  • Your own laptop that connects to the Graduate School's WIFI network.
  • A domain name for the website you want to create (for example: yourname.com). You can buy it here https://www.cdmon.com or in www.sync.es or any ISP and costs about 13 euros per year.
  • A hosting where you can host the website, I recommend the one from www.cdmon.com or that of www.sync.es (but any will do). The hosting should be the simplest you can find with PHP and mySQL. The cost of this type of hosting is between 30 euros and 50 euros per year (depending on the ISP). For example, this hosting: https://www.cdmon.com/cas/alojamiento/basico/miniplan/

It takes a couple of days to activate all of this… so don't wait until the last minute to buy it because it won't help you to have it ready for class. You must arrive at class with the login and password for the control panel of the hosting you have contracted. This will be sent to you by email when you sign up for the hosting.

If someone does not want to buy a domain or hire a hosting but wants to follow the class, they can do so anyway. I will do a live installation on the classroom screen.

If anyone would like to start the installation without the class, here is a good tutorial on how to do so:
http://info.cdmon.com/index.php?page=instalacion-wordpress&hl=esp In case of emergency we can see in class what happened.

What you learn in this class will help you install any type of content management system (including e-commerce). You will see how in one morning we will have a fully functional website!

Class language:It is possible that students from the Master in Euroasian International Business will sign up for this class. If any of them do not speak Spanish, the class will be taught in English… although don't worry because I will be going from table to table checking what you are doing and helping anyone who has difficulties.

If you are a student and have not received notice from the university by the week of July 23 and would like to attend this class, please email me.

See you, hugs.

  1. Hello Montse

I didn't receive the invitation email either, and the class sounds very interesting. I'll try to confirm my attendance with Alba, although I can't find her email on the virtual campus.

    Greetings!!

  2. By the way, in the end there are only 40 places available for this course (that is the capacity of the classroom that they have assigned to us) and the list of students is starting to get long. Please, all of you who wish to attend and have not received the notice (they sent it 2 days ago, on Monday 12th) contact Alba from PMasters to reserve a place.

  3. If all goes well, we should have WP installed in an hour… then we’ll start working on the design, content and Google Analytics. I expect we’ll be done by 2 (in fact, I have lunch on campus at 2, so we’ll have to finish a little earlier).

  4. HelloMontse!!..
It starts at 10 in the morning... and what time do you plan to finish?... to get organized in terms of work...

I've already finished the master's degree, so I'm signing up through this medium!!!
Thank you!!! and see you soon

  5. Hello Montse,
I will be waiting for this day and especially for the email from Pmasters.
    Thanks in advance

    Greetings

    Che Coulibaly
