Next Thursday 21st the days entitled “New Challenges for Cultural Financing – Models and techniques for raising funds in the current economic context" and which will take place over 3 days.
These conferences seem especially important to me in the current context, in which the scarcity of resources and successive budget cuts dramatically affect cultural companies.
The model of financing culture that we followed until now (the French model) based on public financing of activities of general interest to the population, is being replaced by the Anglo-Saxon model based on a mixed public and private funding (… with the public part rather scarce). To make this change, the entire sector must adapt to this new environment and this is being especially difficult for many companies. In addition to the change in funding, there is a decrease in the consumption of culture by citizens as part of the measures to survive in their daily lives… so the situation, more than dramatic, in some cases, is a death sentence.
The Law on Citizen Participation and Patronage should try to act on three levels (legal, economic and institutional) to regulate the current situation and help companies in this new environment... but we are still not clear on how it will do so.
It is in this context that the City Council of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is organizing these conferences on Cultural Financing, adapted to the new economic framework and with the idea of helping the Canary Islands' cultural industries.
My participation will be on Saturday morning, with a presentation on how to get the most out of our funds in the cultural promotion on the Internet, as well as on the tools we have to give more visibility to our sponsors in order to value them and eventually, get more. I will also speak for a moment about the platforms of crowdfunding, although I will not go into detail about this because one of the talks at the conference will be dedicated specifically to how to obtain financing through this type of portal.
You can see the entire program in this PDF: Conference on Financing and Culture
