“The Best of Connie Willis I" is a collection of 11 short stories by this author.
As in all collections, there is a bit of everything, both in terms of literary quality and subject matter. This book is no exception.
Some of the stories are really interesting and remind me a lot of some of Connie Willis' other books. For example, reading the story “Fire Brigade”, you can't help but evoke “The Doomsday Book” (one of the works I like the most by this author).
Another story that I particularly liked is “At the End of the Cretaceous” which tells the story of the consequences of a budget adjustment in a History Faculty. There are some really hilarious situations.
On the other hand, stories like “To All My Dear Daughters” seemed to me to be absolutely filler. But well… this is a matter of taste… and I didn’t like it.
Overall, it is a recommendable book, if only to better understand the work of Connie Willis… we will see how “The Best of Connie Willis II” turns out when it is published.
