Website Creation Workshop for Cultural Companies – February 28

Contents of this article

SDEOn February 28th I have the pleasure of giving the Workshop on creating web pages for cultural companies organized by the SDE (the Business Development Service of the Institut Català d'Indústries Culturals).

The workshop will last 5 hours (from 9:00 to 14:00) and the objective is that at the end of the 5 hours, all those present will be able to put online a fully functional website, with a content manager and a template specially designed for corporate websites. Advanced students will also be able to learn how to set up an e-commerce site.

During the session, students will learn how to create a database, how to use a program that uploads files to a hosting (an FTP), how to install a content manager (in this case it will be WordPress) and how to change the templates that allow you to customize the website to make it unique and how to manage the content.

You don't need any technical knowledge to do this.

To do this, students will need to:

  • Bring their own laptops with WIFI connection and power cable (the classroom will have enough sockets for the computers)
  • A domain name for the website you want to create (for example: yourname.com). You can buy it here www.sync.es or any ISP and costs about 13 euros per year.
  • A hosting where you can host the website, I recommend the one from www.sync.es because their control panel is simple and easy to use (but any will do). The hosting should be the simplest you can find with PHP and mySQL (it is important that it allows the creation of a database). The cost of this type of hosting is between 38 euros and 50 euros per year (depending on the ISP). For example, this hosting: http://www.sync.es/hosting/virtuales-linux100.php
  • It will make the job easier if students arrive with an FTP client already installed on their computer (I recommend Filezilla, it is free and can be downloaded from Softonic)
  • It will also make the work easier if students arrive with the latest version of WordPress downloaded. This can be done from here in Spanish: WordPress in Spanish, and from here in Catalan: WordPress in CatalanIf anyone wants the multilingual site, they can download either one and in class we will see how to install a plugin that allows you to have a website in all the languages you need.

It takes a couple of days to get all this up and running… so it’s best not to wait until the last minute to buy it because it wouldn’t help you have it ready for class.

You must arrive at the workshop with the login and password for the control panel of the hosting you have contracted. This is sent by email when you contract the hosting.

The workshop will be held on February 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Pompeu Fabra University – ESCI-Born Building, classroom 4.1 (Pg. Pujades, 1) Barcelona (Note the location! It is the same university, but not the same building in which we normally provide training Digital Marketing of the SDE, this headquarters is on the other side of the Parc de la Ciutadella, between the courts and Comerç street).

If you would like more information about this course, please contact the SDE.

Note for blog readers who are from Girona: This course will be held in Girona at the beginning of March and will be especially designed for tourism companies. I will write a post shortly indicating the exact day and place where it will be held. It is organized by Costa Brava Tourism.

We talk to each other.
