The first civilizations were founded around large rivers that provided the most important resources: water, agricultural land and easy communications. The people of these civilizations was known by geographic proximity, and this proximity was what allowed them to collaborate.

Today the "river" is the network, which provides us with information and resources, and contact between individuals is no longer limited to geographical proximity precisely thanks to modern communications, and interest groups can create between us though live a great distance.

I think the new civilization is emerging around this "river" which is the network that increasingly there will be more and more common projects that were previously unthinkable. The facility that gives us the Internet to unite for common interests will surely lead to increasingly participatory projects. We expect interesting times-and I do not mean the Chinese curse ;-)
