Digital Music 2.0 – Online Communication for Cultural Industries

Contents of this article

On September 17 and 18, the event was held Digital Music 2.0, the conferences on music and new formats organized by the ICIC (Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries) through the SDE (Business Development Service).

In this edition, the conferences have been included in the framework of the Vic Live Music Market and have been carried out with the collaboration of the ARC (Professional Association of Representatives, Promoters and Managers of Catalonia).

On the 17th they presented themselves Good practice cases for applying Web 2.0 to music promotion and the export of artists. The speakers were Oriol Roca (from Fourni Produccions Sonores), Felix Ruiz (director of the Ocean Discotheque) and Ivan Jimenez (director of Naked Man Recordings). The moderator and presenter of this session was Jose Manuel de Ceballos (director of Music Bus).

The talk by these three experts in music promotion was very interesting, although instead of talking about good practices in web 2.0 the session ended up becoming a forum in which the listeners (almost all members of the ARC and therefore professional promoters and representatives) debated with the speakers about the state of the sector and the changes in this industry.

From the talk, I would highlight a comment about Last.fm conducted by José Manuel Ceballos, in which he indicated that his team is able to predict attendance at certain of their events based on the listeners and subscribers to their artists on Last.fm.

From the presentation made by Oriol Roca, I would highlight the good idea of creating a blog-type website, maintained by a team of 4 people, who day after day, have been creating complementary content for each of the songs of their group. The Kung Fu Troba» as the recordings were being made. The success of the page led them to release the album together with a paper diary that included the content of the online diary they had been creating as the album was being prepared.

The next morning, on Friday the 18th, the session in which I participated as a speaker took place. The presentation was shared with Victor of Francis of Re-export, and together we prepared a decalogue of The 10 most common mistakes in online communication for promoting music and musical artists.

For the presentation, the websites of some of the event attendees' companies were analyzed and many of the slides showed good and bad practices carried out by the webmasters of these websites. Since the day before there had not been much talk about Web 2.0, I took the opportunity to expand on this topic a little and changed the original presentation I had prepared.

The final presentation is the one I show below these lines.

After my presentation, Victor performed a fun simulation of the game "You want to be a millionaire» asking questions about the content of the presentation. It was really fun and I think it was the icing on the cake for a day that I hope was useful for all the listeners.
