AGIMA Neuroscience ConferenceWith the suggestive title "The power of the brain at the service of leadership and happiness in life and in business» This first Neuroscience conference will be held on November 26 at the Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB).

I will be participating as a spectator, but the day promises to be interesting and enjoyable. We will learn how to motivate people who work in our environment and how to achieve happier companies.

The teacher Silvia Damiano, a human brain expert and Mt. Eliza Professor of Executive Education at Melbourne Business School, will discuss her latest research on engagement and leadership in women and men. As reported in her latest book, Engage Me (Involve Me), companies with more engaged people generate more revenue, profits and return per share. More engaged people perform their jobs 20% better and there is a 87% reduction in the number of people leaving the company (loyalty, performance). Companies with engaged people are 43% more productive.

What is engagement? “It is putting your head and heart into what you do and loving it” says Silvia Damiano. The three E’s of Engagement are “Enjoyment”, “Emotional connection” and “Empowerment”.

Silvia explains these concepts in a neural way through the notion of “flow.” I wonder if it is the same concept of “flow” that is applied to video games and computer applications: the state you reach (depending on your abilities and the difficulty of the task) in which time flies and you completely disconnect from what is around you.

For his part, the professor Albert Figueras from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, a doctor and pharmacologist who studies the neurological bases of well-being, will explain how oxytocin, a hormone present during childbirth and breastfeeding, is essential in establishing good social relationships. It also influences our commitment, our decisions, the way we work in a team and how we relate to each other in our organizations.

The day will end with a round table, moderated by the ESADE professor Margarita Marti, where different experts and company managers will explain their strategies to improve commitment, build loyalty and help employees to be happier. Speakers will include: Amor Pujol from agima, Anna Fornés from the Factor humà Foundation, Jil Van Eyle from the Intercom Teaming Group, Jordi Ojeda from Rational Time and the UPC, Juan Carlos Angeles from Hipertin SA. EO Network, Salvador Guasch from Economías Intangibles and Silvia Vilchez, General Director of People at MRW.
