Interesting report on internet benchmarking

Contents of this article

Netsuus has just published the results of an Internet benchmarking survey it conducted last March.

This report is doubly interesting: apart from the results it shows, it is really interesting to know what other benchmarking tools people use and why they do so.

For example, in the table dedicated to tools for measuring the position of competitors on the Internet, we find up to 16 different tools.

The most popular is Alexa (www.alexa.com), followed by Google Trends (www.google.com/trends) and by Google Insights for Search (www.google.com/insights/search/?hl=es# ). This last tool, I was surprised to find it so high on the list of benchmarking tools, when I went back to see it I realized how much it has improved since the last time I went (although it is still a sophisticated version of Google Trends). After these three, we find Google Adplanner (www.google.com/adplanner/), which is useful for knowing data about pages that support advertising, and behind it we find Netsuus (www.netsuus.com), which specializes in creating custom reports.

I won't go on with the list... it's better for you to check it out yourself and see which tools you know and which tools you should know (it's table number 3 in the report).

It is also interesting to see what people would like to know about their competition (table number 6 in the report): what people most want to know is Whether or not your competitors' advertising campaigns are effective, followed by knowing how they manage to capture traffic and how they manage to convert it. In other words, we want to know exactly what our competitors' online marketing strategy is. 🙂

It is not easy to obtain this information, but with patience and knowledge, we can find out (this is what we do in practical benchmarking classes).

Companies also want to know the level of satisfaction of their competitors' customers, the actions they take on social networks and the keywords that their competitors refer to.

Again, I won't go on too long... check out the report when you have a moment to calm down. The most interesting thing is not the results of the survey, but the items that are shown in it (the tools that companies use, the knowledge they gain, what they would like to know, etc.).

I hope this information is useful.

  1. Thank you Montse, it's a shame you didn't come back to me, because we have documented the progress of the new website.

Competition… mmm, what is això? 😀

De nou mercès pels teus consells!

  2. Good morning Montse,

One question: do you know if Alexa can generate a graph that shows the evolution of the Alexa ranking of a web page?

    Thank you,

    Luis

PS: Sinalunya.com is worth 700,000 for mateix; the curset is going to be inspiring! 😀

    1. Lluís, Alexa just shows the evolutionary graph of the websites that are above the 100,000th position
The best advice is that every week you save in a full Excel your position and that of your competition, and that you make the graph yourself (… I know it's obvious, sorry).

      A hug.
