Last Monday I had the pleasure of being able to teach one of the most difficult classes I face from time to time: it is the class of “Creating websites using WordPress” as a publishing and content management tool. It’s not that the installation is difficult… it’s just that it’s very complicated to explain how to do it to people who have never done it before, who use different tools and whose hosting services have different control panels (some of them not very intuitive).
This time, the class was geared towards cultural industries and aimed to help the more than 50 attendees get their own website online and understand how WordPress works as a content manager.
The success was not total, although many achieved it. Some of the incidents encountered were the following (I write it down so that it will be helpful for the next classes):
- The hosting was purchased too late and when the class started, the domain and hosting were not yet activated. The solution is to purchase the hosting beforehand.
- The hosting contracted does not allow the creation of databases: you must ask before making the purchase. The hosting where we make the purchase must allow us to call by phone and ask. If not, it is a hosting that we are not interested in because it will be very difficult for them to give us good technical support when we need it.
- The student does not have the necessary data to take the class. These data are the login and password for the hosting control panel (to create an FTP account) and to be able to create the database.
- The hosting you contracted does not support WordPress: We have encountered some cases in which the hosting you contracted was on Windows servers that did not support the use of WordPress. My recommendation is to contract servers that operate with Linux. But in any case, again, it is better to ask the hosting before contracting it.
- The hosting already had a website. In this case, there is no problem: create a directory within the website and install the new page there for testing purposes. Once you are sure that you want to use WordPress and that you know how to customize it, you can uninstall it and install it again in the root directory.
I think these were all the incidents.
Luckily, I was able to count on the collaboration of two assistants: Alfonso González (author of the WordPress manual that you will find below these lines) and my son Jaume (who has helped me several times in the installation of WordPress on students' computers). I would like to thank them both publicly. Without their help, everything would have been much more complicated.

Regarding the one you mentioned, the answer is yes, you can know which template can be used for WordPress. You just have to look at the font code of the page and follow the link to the full CSS styles. There you will find the name of the topic.
For example, if you enter the font code of this website and click on my CSS you will see what it says. https://www.montsepenarroya.com/wp-content/themes/cross-apple/assets/css/common.css?ver=1.0.6 … it is clear… it is a WordPress because we see the “WP” particle, we see that it serves as a template (because it is “themes”), and we see that the theme is “Cross-apple”. All you have to do is go to Google and click on “Cross Apple WordPress theme” and you will be able to download it or buy it. In my case, it is a theme purchased from Themeforest.net.
